Lone Tree and Denver Facelift Procedures
A youthful face contains smooth contours, even skin tones and ample volume. As we age fat and volume is lost, which leads to the formation of wrinkles, creases and sagging skin. Sun exposure, smoking and genetics all play a role and can accelerate the aging process. The neck skin begins to sag and jowls form. The cumulative effect is a transition from the heart-shaped face of youth to a more squared appearance with age. Although commonly called a “Facelift,” this procedure is more accurately a lower face and neck lift. Facelift procedures are designed to remove excess skin and counteract the downward effects of gravity.
Is it right for me?
There are certainly many options for facial rejuvenation and no single procedure can correct all age-related changes. As always the best results are obtained from using multiple treatment modalities, which begins with excellent skin care. Other procedures, such as Laser Skin Resurfacing can be performed in combination with a Facelift in certain patients. Dr. Winkler will help you decide which procedures or treatments are right for you. However, in the right patient there is no procedure that can duplicate the results of a facelift!
When performed by our specialized surgeons in Lone Tree or Denver, facelifts produce outstanding results. Those who have this procedure are generally very satisfied with the results. The skin of the neck is repositioned under the chin, removing the redundant folds often found with aging. The contours of the jaw become more visible, yielding a youthful and aesthetically pleasing jawline. The aging process continues after surgery, but you will always look more youthful than you would have if hadn’t undergone this procedure.
While there few risks in Facelift surgery, some risk exists in any surgery. Occassionally, there is short-lived numbness of the earlobe area or weakness of muscles near the mouth. This is usually due to stretching of nerves and resolves in a few weeks, if it occurs at all. The most common complication of a Facelift is a blood clot (hematoma) that forms under the skin and this is more common in men. Small hematomas, it can be dealt with in the clinic during the follow up visit. However, very rarely a large blood clot will form, which may require a visit to the operating room.
During the Denver or Lone Tree Facelift Consultation
When you meet with Dr. Winkler, you will discuss exactly what bothers you about your appearance. There are often many options available to correct a given problem. Photos will be taken and often image morphing software is used to demonstrate a possible realistic outcome. A quote is given to you as insurance does not cover procedures done purely for cosmetic reasons. Once you decide to proceed all preoperative and postoperative appointments are made for you by Judy Bryant, our Surgery Coordinator. You will also meet with our Aesthetician, Michelle Young who will provide information about healing and will manage your skin care before and after the procedure.
Understanding the Surgery
Dr. Winkler begins with liposuction of the neck and jowls to remove excess fat. Next, an incision is meticulously made in front of and behind the ear. In men, care is taken to maintain a natural beard line. In all cases, the incision is placed so that it will fall in a natural crease of the skin in order to maximally camouflage the resulting scar. The wrinkled skin is lifted away from the underlying tissues, repositioned and sutured to strong tissue around the ear. This allows the excess skin to be safely removed while minimizing the width of the final scar. The incisions are carefully closed with absorbable sutures that melt away in 1 week. Dr. Winkler does not use drainage tubes under the skin. Rather, a dressing is wrapped around the head and remains on for 24 hours. A Facelift procedure takes around 3 hours and the patient may go home the same day. The procedure is done under general anesthesia, but can be done under conscious sedation in certain circumstances.
What to Expect After Surgery
Most patients are quite comfortable after surgery, although pain medication is routinely prescribed. For the first 1-2 weeks, there is some bruising and swelling. The neck is lumpy after surgery for up to 4 weeks. Ice packs are recommended for the first week to limit swelling. After the first week, the lumpiness of the skin can be lessened with warm, moist compresses. Most patients take 10-14 days off of work following a Facelift procedure. You will be provided very detailed instructions before the surgery so that you will know exactly what you are expected to do. To monitor healing, Dr. Winkler will see you 1 day, 1week and 1 month after the procedure and Michelle Smith will help to maximize the speed of healing through nutrition and other procedures. After healing, you will have a healthy and more youthful appearance!
