Denver, Lone Tree and Boulder Necklift/Minilift

As the name may imply the Necklift or Minilift is a limited procedure to address problems in the neck.  Consequently, this procedure is not for everyone and does cannot replace a facelift for many people.  The Necklift utilizes the part of the facelift incision that is behind the ear.  Therefore, there is only one direction of pull.

Is it right for me?

As always, the best results are obtained from using multiple treatment modalities, which begins with excellent skin care.  Other procedures, such as Laser Skin Resurfacing can be performed in combination with a Necklift/Minilift in certain patients.  Generally speaking, the Necklift/Minilift is reserved for younger patients with limited aging findings in the neck or jowls.

Potential Benefits

When performed in the appropriate candidates, this procedure can produce very satisfying results.  Necklift/Minilift can be used to address the jowls, mild neck skin laxity and mild neck fat.  The contours of the jaw become more visible, yielding a youthful and aesthetically pleasing jawline.  Of course, the aging process continues after surgery, but you will always look more youthful than you would have if hadn’t undergone this procedure.

Potential Risks

While there few risks in Necklift/Minilift surgery, some risk is present in any surgery.  Occassionally, there is short-lived numbness of the earlobe area or weakness of muscles near the mouth.  This is usually due to stretching of nerves and resolves in a few weeks, if it occurs at all.  The most common complication of a Necklift/Minilift is a blood clot (hematoma) that forms under the skin and this is more common in men.  Small hematomas, it can be dealt with in the clinic during the follow up visit.  However, very rarely a large blood clot will form, which may require a visit to the operating room.

During the Consultation

When you meet with one of our doctors, you will discuss exactly what bothers you about your appearance.  There are often many options available to correct a given problem.  Photos will be taken and often image morphing software is used to demonstrate a possible realistic outcome.  A quote is given to you as insurance does not cover procedures done purely for cosmetic reasons.  Once you decide to proceed all preoperative and postoperative appointments are made for you by our Surgery Coordinators.  We will also provide information about healing and will manage your skin care before and after the procedure.

Understanding the Surgery

The surgery begins with liposuction of the neck and jowls to remove excess fat.  Next, an incision is meticulously made behind the ear.  In all cases, the incision is placed so that it will fall in a natural crease of the skin in order to maximally camouflage the resulting scar.  The wrinkled skin is lifted away from the underlying tissues, repositioned and sutured to strong tissue around the ear.  This allows the excess skin to be safely removed while minimizing the width of the final scar.  The incisions are carefully closed with absorbable sutures that melt away in 1 week.  Our doctors do not routinely use drainage tubes under the skin.  Rather, a dressing is wrapped around the head and remains on for 24 hours.  The procedure takes around 1.5 hours and the patient will go home the same day.  The procedure is done under general anesthesia, but can be done under conscious sedation in certain circumstances.

What to Expect After Surgery

Most patients are quite comfortable after surgery, although pain medication is routinely prescribed.  For the first 1-2 weeks, there is some bruising and swelling.  The neck is lumpy after surgery for up to 4 weeks.  Ice packs are recommended for the first week to limit swelling.  After the first week, the lumpiness of the skin can be lessened with warm, moist compresses.  Most patients take 10 days off of work following a Necklift/Minilift procedure.  You will be provided very detailed instructions before the surgery so that you will know exactly what you are expected to do.  To monitor healing, we will see you 1 day, 1week and 1 month after the procedure. Our team will help to maximize the speed of healing through nutrition and other procedures.  After healing, you will have a healthy and more youthful appearance!
